How to Choose a 5-Star Hotel in Cape Town

Guests often tell us they spent longer choosing their hotel than booking their flights, and Cape Town does that to people. There are dozens of 5-star hotels here, spread across neighbourhoods that offer quite different holidays, and the booking sites don’t explain the differences. We’ve been hosting visitors in Camps Bay for 25 years, so this is what we tell friends of friends who write to us for advice before a first trip. It starts with the stars themselves, because in South Africa they mean something official.

What 5 Stars Mean in South Africa

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa is the country’s only official quality assurance body for accommodation, and it assesses every graded property once a year. A property applies, pays for the assessment, gets measured against published criteria for its category, and then gets measured again the following year. Since 2019 the council has run a separate category for boutique hotels, so a nine-room house is judged on its own terms and can hold the same five stars as a 200-room tower. There’s also a level above, called 5 Star Premium, reserved for properties the council considers exceptional. It’s a system with teeth, and it means a 5 star hotel here has been inspected recently by someone with no stake in your booking.

Where to Stay in Cape Town

The city is smaller than the map suggests, and every major sight sits within an hour of everywhere, so the choice of neighbourhood is really a choice of what you’d like outside the front door.

  • Camps Bay: the one beach suburb near the city with a full restaurant promenade, backed by the Twelve Apostles and facing west into the sunset. The streets above the strip are quiet and residential.
  • V&A Waterfront: the harbour development, with shopping, museums and boat trips on the doorstep, and the crowds that come with them.
  • City Bowl: the centre of town, closest to the restaurants and galleries, and the practical pick for a short stay.

How Long to Stay in Cape Town

Allow five nights at a minimum, seven if you can, and stay in one place for all of them. Changing hotels mid-trip costs most of a day each time, between the 11am check-out, the 3pm check-in, and the repacking, and those are daylight hours in one of the world’s better cities to spend daylight in.

What to Ask Before You Book

These are the four things we’d check on any property in the city, ours included:

  • The pool’s temperature: the sea at Camps Bay is beautiful and cold all year, so the pool is where most of your swimming will happen, and plenty of pools in this city go unheated. Ours are heated through winter, which we mention because nobody thinks to ask until July.
  • What the rate covers: at a 5-star hotel, the price should already include breakfast, WiFi, and taxes, and the difference between properties shows in what gets added beyond that. We pour wine and hand around canapés at sunset every evening, on the house.
  • How you’ll get around: Cape Town’s sights are spread out, and a hotel with its own cars and drivers makes easy day trips of the Winelands, Cape Point and the penguins.
  • The room count: nine rooms means staff who know your coffee order by the second morning. It also means booking months ahead for high season, because small properties fill from the far end of the calendar.

Its remarkable artwork and designs, together with its magnificent architecture, set it apart from other hotels. When staying at an opulent five-star hotel, you shouldn’t wake up in the morning wondering what to have for breakfast. In order to guarantee this, these hotels’ stay packages include a free breakfast with plenty of choices, so there’s always something for everyone. Having it served in your room is an extra perk that certain hotels could provide. Most five-star hotels also serve delicious appetizers and welcome visitors with a glass of delicious, eye-soothing beverages to enhance the experience. Not only that, but when they check out or arrive at their room, many five-star hotels surprise their guests with a bottle of champagne or a delightful snack. These luxuries offers guests the royal treatment and serve as a means of attracting them back.

Hotel Amenities

A decent five-star hotel should provide a plethora of on-site facilities to ensure a hassle-free stay. A five-star hotel’s list of amenities includes free Wi-Fi, a gym, a spa, a private pool in front of each room, secure parking, a fully functional business center, shuttle and taxi service, a variety of dining options, friendly and knowledgeable staff, emergency services, a guest support desk, and many more. This is how handy it is to stay at a five-star hotel—you name it, they have everything.

Room & Its Amenities

You’ll spend your time unwinding in the hotel following a long day outside. Naturally, it must be cozy and meet your demands, and five-star hotels make sure you have no complaints. Numerous top-rated hotels offer amenities like a fully stocked minibar, an electric safe, complimentary snacks and drinks, a full-length mirror with adequate lighting, Wi-Fi, a cozy sitting area, blackout shades, robes, slippers, high-end toiletries, fluffy bath towels, F&B room service, comfy beds, and so forth.

Safety & Security Services

Celebrities, politicians, business moguls, and other notable individuals frequent the majority of five-star hotels; as a result, the establishments’ high standards of superior security become a major worry. These opulent hotels employ the best security services to ensure that its patrons feel comfortable and at ease, providing the highest level of protection possible so that guests may be free from fear about possible invaders at any time of day.

Confidentiality & Privacy

A primary worry for public figures such as celebrities is maintaining the privacy of their hotel stays. This is to prevent unwanted attention from the media, unpleasant interactions, work-related obstacles, spoiling a vacation, or interference with personal time. While this capability might not be as important to the average person, a VIP or well-known individual might find it to be quite valuable. The employees of five-star hotels make sure it is a requirement that they keep all guest information private. They take confidentiality and anonymity very seriously.

Cleanliness & Hygiene

Maintaining the cleanliness and hygienic conditions of the property is one of the essential requirements to become a five-star establishment. You won’t have to worry about staying in a room with filthy bedding or a bathroom full of spiders when you choose a 5-star hotel. In a five-star hotel, you may expect spotless linens and immaculate window treatments. The hotel’s other areas—the restaurant, pool, gym, salons, lobby, hallways, and so forth—all maintain a high standard of cleanliness. In such establishments, you almost never have to call the housekeeping or a complaint desk for concerns related to cleanliness.

Feeling Right At Home

As previously said, a stay at a five-star hotel is equivalent to a vacation on its own. It’s not simply a great spot to sleep, dine, and board. It’s a location to enjoy your stay as well. Every five-star hotel features a spa, a well-known salon chain, an advanced fitness center, a sauna, and indoor sports facilities like badminton, tennis, squash, and the like. Many consumers like the amenities offered by hotels and prefer longer stays.

Being Treated Like Royalty

First-time tourists may find 5-star properties daunting due of their extravagant experiences. However, every hotel extends courtesy and respect to its visitors. This is not to say that you should take advantage of the situation and act whatever you wish. The hotel is a communal area, and five stars, in general, take a bit more care to preserve their ambience and brand. For this reason, there are a few things to consider the first time you stay at a 5-star hotel.

Dress for The Occasion

All hotels claim to provide comfortable accommodations for their visitors, but that doesn’t imply you can stroll into the dining room still wearing your cozy pajamas. You should dress to impress as you will be meeting high-profile individuals. When enjoying the hotel’s amenities, such as the common pool or the gym, wear appropriate clothing. A swimming uniform is required here; you cannot jump into the pool in only your underpants or cotton T-shirts. Similarly, formal attire—rather than casual—is anticipated in the hotel’s fine dining establishments. Don appropriate shoes and pay attention as well.

Dining Etiquettes

Dining etiquette is essential while dining at five-star hotel restaurants in addition to dressing appropriately and wearing appropriate footwear. If not all, abide by the fundamental guidelines, such as how to sit, where to put and use silverware, when to make noise while eating, when to signal the waiter, and so on. Ask the staff if you have any questions regarding the meal or anything else. It’s far worse to make a mistake than to come out as uninformed. Do not worry; kind and helpful personnel may be found at every welcoming hotel!

Keep it Low

It is a five-star building, and the people occupying the other rooms are either VIPs, celebrities, or well-to-do individuals. Visitors might be there for leisure, a conference, or a meeting. It will be beneficial to be quiet and considerate. Certain sounds, such as a wailing infant, are uncontrollable. However, there are ways to limit your noise level so that you don’t bother other visitors. Examples of such noises include chatting or laughing loudly, playing loud music or TV, or yelling out to others.

Tip Aptly

In a five-star hotel or any other type of lodging, you are aware that tipping waiters and room service personnel is polite and appropriate. However, you should be a little more willing to part with your cash than normal in a 5-star. The ideal thing to do would be to follow the customs of five-star hotels; these employees’ gratuities are separate from their hotel bills. Giving tips is optional, so don’t worry about it; instead, express your gratitude to the personnel for their exceptional work.

Follow the rules

When receiving any form of service at the hotel, please don’t cause any disturbances. Respectfully abide by the guidelines. Never take action out of annoyance or fury. Cultured individuals respect local customs and laws in order to have a tranquil stay.

Know what you can take home

Not everything that is offered and supplied in a five-star hotel room is portable. You don’t want to be perceived as a cheapskate by the employees and management. The hotel allows you to bring some items, such as sewing kits, newspapers, and toiletries. It is not recommended for products such as batteries, towels, hair dryers, bathrobes, remote controls, kitchenware, cutlery, etc. to be brought home.
